Prostitution/ Sex Work
The Libertarian Stance On Prostitution: Let Them Eat Cake!
Until recently, prostitution has been a topic that has gone ignored due to the social stigmas associated with it. In recent years the conversation regarding victimless crimes like these has become more commonplace, especially since the shut down of sites like Backpage and others in an attempt by the federal government to further control the activities of people under the guise of fight sex trafficking.
While both Republican and Democrat politicians frequently partake in the services of sex workers, neither side has done anything to protect the rights of these marginalized providers of consensual services, instead focusing on the perceived social ramifications their services have on the “moral” standing of the local society and the unfounded concerns of increased criminal activities.
Libertarian Party Position:
Per the 2018 party platform:
“The Libertarian Party supports the decriminalization of prostitution. We assert the right of consenting adults to provide sexual services to clients for compensation, and the right of clients to purchase sexual services from consenting sex workers.”
The Libertarian Stance:
The libertarian community has long been a supporter of consensual free trade, regardless of personal opinions on topics like morality or religion. As long as both parties are consenting, the act of exchanging sex for money carries no difference in the minds of libertarians than that of trading 40 hours of one’s life every week for a paycheck. In any situation, if the terms are voluntary and no one is forcing the other into a transaction, then the business conducted is solely between the consenting parties involved.
